Death or financial ruin for individuals or families? You can’t stop it, unfortunately. Closer to home, I know one friend’s family that has lost half of their income thanks to a stroke of misfortune. It’s difficult to reach to finances for help. That’s why many people take the approach of “living paycheck to paycheck”. Life is short and there are no easy options. For those struggling with finances, here are 20 quotes from famous people that can help.
1. Be honest and alive
By Margaret Bandzenbaum
Small lies can have big consequences. Ask the person telling you to lie if he can’t tell the truth. Our world is hard to navigate, but we must find happiness in small things: doing things and taking care of ourselves in small ways. We don’t have to spend money on toys, new clothes, or cars to show that we love someone. Just take care of what matters. We must have an open and honest discussion with ourselves. Ultimately, we can’t depend on others, and neither can live. Talk about what makes you feel joy, and it becomes clear that for the rest of your life, you don’t have to worry about what will happen with money. Find joy in the small things, because they become the most important ones.
2. Use the smallest scale you can
By Nikki Morales
Life’s a problem for some. Not me.
The bigger you get the harder it is to solve problems. Every great business leader uses what he or she knows best.
I hate making sense of money. What I do know best is that being able to continue making money for many years. Despite the “long tail” of cryptocurrencies, it’s obvious that money is the end all be all for most people. Either we have it or we don’t. So, people who are overconfident or act as they have it somehow aren’t serious about the problem. Stop wasting time. If you have a problem, you should discuss it. There are many books and online resources that can help. But with the exception of the IRS, there’s no employer you can call. Just be honest about how you’re not sure about how much money you’re dealing with every month.
3. Long story short, always take the money you are owed
By Robin D. Wieber
“Money, for those who haven’t figured it out yet, is a friend to a fool.” — Anonymous
If we did not work hard for it, we would be rich in money. None of us are rich or poor. We don’t need more than what we make. We need money, however, to do the things we care about and the things we think we should be doing.
Owning money allows us to pursue things we love. I don’t think anyone questions that basic idea anymore. Still, the realities of money are still many people’s least favorite thing. You might not be rich or poor, but if we are truly pursuing happiness, “money” might be the only real reason to be happy.
4. Faced with unexpected expenses, we should pray not to be poor
By Chief Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes
Life comes with unexpected expenses. It is our job as lawyers to be prepared for them.
The law is the teacher of who lives and who dies. The law can help you with your finances, but there are times when we find ourselves needing help. There are times when we will need to make sacrifices for other people, or we will need to make sacrifices for ourselves. It is important to remember that, in doing so, we should pray not to be poor. If we don’t live and breathe in a way that allows us to help others when necessary, we won’t be able to help ourselves when we are supposed to.
5.
“If you want an easy life, get out of finance.” — Anonymous
Financial education should be required. Yes, I realize it is expensive. It takes time. It takes money. Do you really think it’s worth it? If it’s not true for those who have education and financial success, then why should it be true for us?
In short, when it comes to money, something is meant to be passed on. If we pass down our money to the children who have a father or mother with no education, or no financial success to speak of, then we are not what we are on paper. It should be a part of the higher code.
*Bonus*6. Use your time wisely
By Jules Kaengarten
Good finance is to be simple and to be disciplined and forgiving. Who wants to spend time working through many diverse industries or sectors.
